Showcasing FHG’s Contribution to FLEXSHIP

Electrification and hybrid operation of vessels are key components of the transformation to Green Shipping. For optimal implementation, an intelligent energy management system (EMS) and a reliable battery management system (BMS) are urgently required. These systems are being developed by Fraunhofer IISB for the application in FLEXSHIP.

Who are the responsible people advancing FLEXSHIP on behalf of Fraunhofer?

  • Radu Schwarz, Group leader Battery Systems | Development of the open-source Battery Management System foxBMS | Coordination of Fraunhofer IISB contributions in FLEXSHIP.
  • Christopher Lange, Senior scientist energy management | Energy management development, energy system simulation and automation | Coordination of WP2 and project work in FLEXSHIP.
  • Alexandra Rueß, Researcher energy management | Energy system optimization and control | Development of the Energy Management System in FLEXSHIP.
  • Lars Schmidt, Researcher Battery Systems | Development of monitoring electronics for efficient operation of battery systems | Development of the Battery Management System in FLEXSHIP.

How Fraunhofer IISB is shaping FLEXSHIP’s success:

  • Development of different variants for the Energy Management System (rule- and optimisation-based approaches) and investigation of the impact on system efficiency and emissions of each variant.
  • Development and assembly of the hard- and software for the Battery Management System based on the development platform foxBMS, ensuring safe operation of the battery by preventing hazardous events and detecting faults within the battery system.
  • Support the FLEXSHIP partners in integration and testing of the BMS into the DEMO vessels.
  • Leading WP2 ā€œVessel grid architecture design and system optimisationā€ and advancing the success of the individual tasks 2.1 to 2.5.
  • Support the FLEXSHIP partners in setting up the Digital Twin, conception of the grid architecture and in the Power Management System development.

This is some of Fraunhofer IISB’s contribution to FLEXSHIP. Now, be curious about what the other partners will share!
